One important understanding about how relationships work is that we do not just relate and react to each other with what is expressed openly and directly, we actually respond and react to the subtle and mostly unconscious signals that we unconsciously give off to each other just as much, if not more. Examples of such signals are avoiding eye contact or turning the body away while talking to a particular person, or nervousness and subtle shaking in the voice when we address a group, making comments that unconsciously slight someone that lead to an argument, or unconsciously physically bumping repeatedly into someone whom we really like. It is as if there's an invisible force field between people that compels us to interact with each other in certain ways. In process work, we call this the relationship field, it exists between two people or in groups of people.

In other words, we do not just relate at the consensus reality level, we also relate very much through the dreamland level. Before we have enough attention and clarity to catch and name what is actually happening in the relationship at dreamland level, we often feel the presence of this field as a vibe, an inkling, a mood or atmosphere in the relationship or group. People might speak indirectly about it, or we might have a huge reaction to somebody and wonder where it came from. We might feel upset towards someone whom we really love and wonder why. We might have differences with someone that keeps repeating itself (cycles) and never seem to resolve (this situation can occur with someone dear to us too). We might find ourselves strongly attracted to someone that is hard to explain.

Similarly to how we spoke earlier of problems as meaningful experiences that occur to us, so are relationship encounters. Our interaction with people, both positive and negative, are important doorways to personal growth as well as growing together. People in our relationships act as mirrors to ourselves, it engages us to reflect upon ourselves to see beyond our surface. Hence, the ability to recognize relationships and our relationship partners as our teachers is important, and understanding relationship difficulties or problems as opportunities for personal growth and growing together.

Watch this space as we share stories of how process work helped people through their relationship challenges or further deepen relationships that are already great.

"Most couples act decently, yet are simultaneously consumed by the drive for greater freedom"
