WHAT IS COMA?

In medicine, a coma refers to a state of prolonged unconsciousness, when one cannot be awakened; fails to respond normally to painful stimuli, light, or sound; lacks a normal sleep-wake cycle; and, does not initiate voluntary actions. This is often due to an injury to the brainstem and/or the cerebral cortex. The injury can be due to intoxication (due to drugs mainly), metabolic abnormalities, central nervous system diseases, acute neurological injuries such as stroke and physical trauma to the brain.

WHAT IS COMA WORK?

Coma work refers to a specific set of techniques, based on process-oriented psychology, to work with patients in a comatose state. In coma work, subtle and yet important signals from the patients are picked up. This will help to unravel the message that the patient has about their life or a message to deliver to their family members.

WHY COMA WORK?

Taking care of comatose patients has always been a tough job for healthcare professionals and family caretaker. When dealing with comatose patients, or patients with severe brain damage, caretakers are often faced with many challenges, as the bridge of communication is lost.

Coma work allows and enables healthcare professionals and caretakers to pick up both verbal and non-verbal signals from comatose patients for meaningful interaction, regardless of their consciousness state. More importantly, coma work provides an essential mean of communication that allows all parties involved to identify important messages before the worst can happen.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Coma work begins with the attitude that the comatose patient is capable of perceiving and relating to outer and inner experience. Coma work, therefore, discovers which communication channels are still open to the patient, and then use these channels to relate to patient. These channels are normally hard to identify because they involve small and minute signals such as: eye movement, facial expressions and vocal by the patient. Coma worker will attempt to interact with the patient using these signals or sometimes, amplify them. During the interaction, coma worker is guided by feedback from the patient. For instance, if the coma worker joins the patient in vocalizations, perhaps adding a bit of extra modulation, the patient may respond by changing his or her own vocalization. In addition, the coma worker may attempt to set up a “binary” communication link, inviting the patient to use available movement, like the movement of an eyelid or a finger, to answer “yes” or “no” to questions.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND COMA WORK?

  • Healthcare professionals who would like to create meaningful interactions with coma patients and make a difference in the healthcare industry.

  • Caretakers, families of patients who want to bring back the bridge of communication with their family member in comatose state.

  • Process facilitator and coaches who is hungry to learn more to apply to their profession.

  • Anyone who is curious about coma work

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN FROM COMA WORK SEMINAR?

In the 2 days seminar, you will learn:
